Simple Ways To Answer Summary Passage

Summary implies the shortened form of a passage or restating the main idea or points in a given passage in a concise manner.
It may appear a difficult task at first but once you master the technique of writing a good summary, you are open to a number of advantages. Summary writing gives you the ability to transmit ideas orally where you have limited time within which to reproduce some points contained in an original speech. It also helps you to narrate the contents of a letter or an essay or report or book  within limited time and paper. What is more? Obviously, your ability to write a good summary earns you profitable dividend by way of marks in your examination. Why then don’t you consider some steps in writing it.

The world of books is filled with innumerable treaties of Hows and Don’ts on summary writing. Some of them invariably confuse rather than help the student. While one cannot doubt the fact that an author, for example, means well when he outlines as many as 30 steps to a “good précis”, it is the believe of the author that such steps are so many that they can only be mastered within about half a decade! Hence the need for a concise, but synthetic approach such as the following steps below:
1.       Read the whole passage as fast as possible so as to understand what it is all about.
2.       Then, read the questions so that you may know what is expected of you.
3.       Then, read the portion that you are asked to summarise much more gradually, noting the reasons or points you are asked to summarise.
4.       Then, write out the summary of the reasons, points or ideas as demanded by the question.
5.       Correct all mistakes of grammar after you have removed all unnecessary materials or repetitions.
6.       If there are still other summaries to be made  of special parts of the given passage then do so one after the other bearing in mind that a summary based upon your own understanding is much better than one which is made u of selections of sentences from the main passage.

Now, you are free to take a look at the few of the model questions and answers on summary below:

Simple Ways To Answer Comprehension Passage

The comprehension exercise invariably tests your power of understanding written English prose passages. It is believed that if you are able to understand the passage set in the examination you have reached a considerable standard in understanding and as such you will be able to understand everyday prose passage, simple books and essays

HOW TO ANSWER COMPREHENSION PASSAGES SUCCESSFULLY
If the comprehension exercise involves more than one passage, you have to read all the passages before you begin to answer the questions on each passage, one after the other, i.e when a question requires you to display your understanding of two or more passages at the same time.

TESTED AND SUCCESSFUL STEPS:
1.       Read the passage(s) as far possible in order that you have a general understanding of the main ideas. You should spend six minutes in doing that.
2.       Next, read the questions so carefully so that you can know what you are supposed to look for in the passage(s).
3.       Then read the passage a second time as gradually as you can so that you can understand it in detail. (In a test which involves more than one passage, you have to concentrate on one passage at a time at this third stage unless there are questions which demands comparison or contrast of ideas in more than one passage).
4.       Begin to answer the questions one by one with a close reference to the passage.
Make sure that you follow the instructions contained in the questions. For instance, you may be asked to give the meaning of a word by using another word. It is your duty to give just a word. If on the other hand, you are allowed to give the meaning of a word by means of a phrase, you can do so.
In answering the “how”, the “what”, questions, make sure you limit yourself to the answer contained in the passage. Do not include your own reconceived idea_ an idea which has no bearing, direct or indirect, or what the question asks for.

The questions generally test the following:
1.       Meaning of words
2.       The structural pattern of the sentence like the parts of speech, phrase and clauses.
3.       The reasons given in explaining a fact or an idea.
4.       The advantages or disadvantages of a particular object or line of action mentioned in the passage.
5.       Sometimes_ the style of the writer_ the effectiveness of the words and sentences or even figures of speech used.
6.       Sometimes, your own impression about the passage.
As for tackling the meaning of words, you need to widen your reading scope. The more you read, the more words you will acquire and the greater the ease with which you will understand comprehension exercises. Now, you are free to take a look at the few of the model questions and answers listed below
